Leonardo's Pizza (by the slice) (706 West University Ave., 378-2001). Leo's is a great little pizza place that I guess you could call a local hangout. The food is cheap, and not only good but you get a helluva lot for your money. Besides pizza they serve the usual, pasta, fettucini alfredo, etc. The inside of the restaurant is decorated with psychadelic painting and sculptures, as is the surrounding walls outside the restaurant. Lots of nifty prople to meet there too, at nighttime Leo's draws a large amount of local youth. -legion@grove.ufl.edu
Hardback Cafe (232 SE 1st St., 372-6248). The Hardback is a small building located next to the Hippodrome State Theater in Gainesville (the Hippodrome is whitish and round and big) and is the host for a lot of local DIY-ing punk and hardcore acts, etc. They have ska shows occasionally as well. The Hardback holds shows most nights during the week, and admission is usually 2-3 dollars. The room inside is small but feels really homey and the atmosphere can be a lot of fun. And for a bit of trivia, it's the same Hardback mentioned at the end of Sublime's 1992 album, 40 oz. to Freedom. -legion@grove.ufl.edu
The Covered Dish (210 SW 2nd Ave., 377-3334). Finally the Covered Dish is the larger of the two clubs mentioned here, and presents both a larger interior including a pit, and a larger variety of shows, ranging from just about every breed of local band, from grungish alternative shows to punk to funk to ska (Gainesville's Less than Jake plays here and at the Hardback often) to everything in between and even mellower tastes. Admission is usually 4-5 dollars and sometimes smaller regional and national acts can be seen there as well. The Dish is painted on the outside with large colorful murals of all sorts of keen things. Shows are held nightly. -legion@grove.ufl.edu
